“Put on then, as God’s holy and beloved people, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience.  Forgive one another; and if one has a complaint against another, as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also forgive.  And above all these things put on charity, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body.  And always be thankful - - - And whatever you do in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3: 12-15,17).

Special Saint of the Week Saint
Saint Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, fought eloquently against the Nestorians.  He presided in the name of Pope Celestine at the Council of Ephesus, where the heresy of Nestorius was condemned.  Mary must be referred to as Mother of God.  Jesus Christ, Our Redeemer is True God and True Man.

Gospel Words of Jesus Christ Our Divine Savior
28 Amen I say to you, that all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and the blasphemies wherewith they shall blaspheme: 29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, shall never have forgiveness, but shall be guilty of an everlasting sin. 30 Because they said: He hath an unclean spirit. (Mark 3: 28-30)

From the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Romans
6 For why did Christ, when as yet we were weak, according to the time, die for the ungodly? 7 For scarce for a just man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man some one would dare to die. 8 But God commended his charity towards us; because when as yet we were sinners, according to the time, 9 Christ died for us; much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. (Rom 5: 6-10)

Spiritual Thought Of The Week
Taken from the Introduction to the Devout Life, by Saint Francis De Sales, written in the year 1609, Part One, CHAPTER VI.  THE first purification to be made is from sin.  The place to start is the Sacrament of Penance. Seek the best confessor within your reach, use one of the many little books written in order to help the examination of conscience - - - Read some such book carefully, examining point by point wherein you have sinned, from the first use of your reason to the present time. And if you mistrust your memory, write down the result of your examination. Having thus sought out the evil spots in your conscience, strive to detest them, and to reject them with the greatest abhorrence and contrition of which your heart is capable, bearing in mind these four things:  By sin you have lost God’s Grace, rejected your share in Paradise, accepted the pains of Hell, and renounced God’s Eternal Love. You see, my child, that I am now speaking of a general confession of your whole life, which, while I grant it is not always necessary, I yet believe will be found most helpful in the beginning of your pursuit after holiness, and therefore I earnestly advise you to make it.

From The Imitation Of Christ
By Thomas A Kempis Book Three The Twenty-Fourth Chapter: THE VOICE OF CHRIST - - - MY CHILD, do not be curious. Do not trouble yourself with idle cares. What matters this or that to you? Follow Me. What is it to you if a man is such and such, if another does or says this or that? You will not have to answer for others, but you will have to give an account of yourself. Why, then, do you meddle in their affairs?  Behold, I know all men. I see everything that is done under the sun, and I know how matters stand with each person.  I know what is in his mind and what in his heart and the end to which his intention is directed.  Commit all things to Me, therefore, and keep yourself in good peace. Let him who is disturbed be as restless as he will. Whatever he has said or done will fall upon himself, for he cannot deceive Me.

From The Teachings Of The Second Vatican Council
Dei Verbum (On the Word of God): #9 “Hence there exists a close connection and communication between sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For Sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the divine Spirit, while sacred tradition takes the word of God entrusted by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and hands it on to their successors in its full purity, so that led by the light of the Spirit of truth, they may in proclaiming it preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently it is not from Sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore both sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same sense of loyalty and reverence.”

From The Code Of Canon Law
Canon 233 §1. The duty of fostering vocations rests with the entire Christian community so that the needs of the sacred ministry in the universal Church are provided for sufficiently. This duty especially binds Christian families, educators, and, in a special way, priests, particularly pastors. Diocesan bishops, who most especially are to be concerned for promoting vocations, are to teach the people entrusted to them of the importance of the sacred ministry and of the need for ministers in the Church and are to encourage and support endeavors to foster vocations, especially by means of projects established for that purpose.  §2. Moreover, priests, and especially diocesan bishops, are to have concern that men of a more mature age who consider themselves called to the sacred ministries are prudently assisted in word and deed and duly prepared.Catechism Of The Catholic Church #2323 Because it should be treated as a person from conception, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed like every other human being.

THANK YOU BISHOP KICANAS

It was a wonderful celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation!  It was a beautifully offered Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Mass!  Saint Gianna’s Latin Mass Community has completed its first year in a marvelous way with Bishop Kicanas celebrating Sacrifice and Sacrament in the ancient rite of the Church according to the 1962 liturgical books.  It was a wonderful day indeed.  Everyone in attendance was absorbed by the beauty and piety of the Church’s liturgies.  We are deeply grateful to Bishop Kicanas.  We look forward to his next visit with us to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.  Also, let us express our thanks to both Father Reinders and Father Isaac.  They have enriched us with their priestly presence.

In an unrelated matter, we received a notice, dated January 26th, from the Bishop’s office.  Please read it.  The national group Call to Action has made public, on many occasions, dissenting views, not in accord with the teachings of the holy Roman Catholic Church.   The memo reads:

“Some time ago a few members of call to Action, a national group that has expressed views dissenting from Church teaching informed me that they had invited Bishop Thomas Gumbelton, Retired Bishop of Detroit, to speak in Tucson.  At that time they asked if the event could be held at a parish or a catholic institution and if I would help to promote it.  I said that it should not be held at a aprish or catholic institution and I would not encourage Diocesan participation.

Last week Bishop Gumbelton wrote to tell me he was speaking in the Diocese.  This week I received a second letter from him asking permission to speak in the Diocese.  I wrote to him saying, “In response to your letter seeking permission to speak in the Diocese of Tucson, I do not grant permission.  As you know the Diocese did not invite you to come, but the invitation was from call to Action.  Your response to their invitation, without my permission, is your decision.”

This morning after sending the letter I received a call from the Arizona Daily Star asking why Bishop Gumbelton was not speaking in a Catholic institution.  I indicated that neither I nor any parish invited him to (be) present in the Diocese but the invitation came from some local members of Call to Action.

It may be that there will be some media attention to this and I wanted you to hear from me what had transpired.

If you or any of your parishioners have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.”

We here at Saint Gianna’s stand in complete solidarity with Bishop Kicanas.
