July 15, 2007 - - - SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
“Put on then, as God’s holy and beloved people, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience. Forgive one another; and if one has a complaint against another, as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also forgive. And above all these things put on charity, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And always be thankful - - - And whatever you do in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3: 12-15,17).

Gospel Words of Jesus Christ Our Divine Savior
29 Jesus answering, said: Amen I say to you, there is no man who hath left house or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 Who shall not receive an hundred times as much, now in this time; houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions: and in the world to come life everlasting. (Mark 10: 29-30)
From the First Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not in loftiness of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of Christ. 2 For I judged not myself to know anything among you, but Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not in the persuasive words of human wisdom, but in showing of the Spirit and power; 5 That your faith might not stand on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. (2: 1-5)
Spiritual Thought Of The Week
From Blessed Are The Pure In Heart by Bishop Robert W. Finn: “Pornography violates modesty, chastity and truth. Human sexuality involves modesty which protects the privacy of individuals regarding what is most personal and intimate. To invade this privacy, and unveil what should remain hidden, is an assault on human dignity.”
From The Imitation Of Christ By Thomas A Kempis
Book Three the Forty- Fourth Chapter- - GRANT me help in my needs, O Lord, for the aid of man is useless. How often have I failed to find faithfulness in places where I thought I possessed it! And how many times I have found it where I least expected it! Vain, therefore, is hope in men, but the salvation of the just is in You, O God. Blessed be Your name, O Lord my God, in everything that befalls us. We are weak and unstable, quickly deceived and changed. Who is the man that is able to guard himself with such caution and care as not sometimes to fall into deception or perplexity? He who confides in You, O Lord, and seeks You with a simple heart does not fall so easily. And if some trouble should come upon him, no matter how entangled in it he may be, he will be more quickly delivered and comforted by You. For You will not forsake him who trusts in You to the very end.
From The Teachings Of The Second Vatican Council
SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM (On the Sacred Liturgy) #10: “The liturgy in its turn moves the faithful, filled with "the paschal sacraments," to be "one in holiness"; it prays that "they may hold fast in their lives to what they have grasped by their faith"; the renewal in the Eucharist of the covenant between the Lord and man draws the faithful into the compelling love of Christ and sets them on fire. From the liturgy, therefore, and especially from the Eucharist, as from a font, grace is poured forth upon us; and the sanctification of men in Christ and the glorification of God, to which all other activities of the Church are directed as toward their end, is achieved in the most efficacious possible way.”
From The Code Of Canon Law Canon 333 §1. By virtue of his office, the Roman Pontiff not only possesses power offer the universal Church but also obtains the primacy of ordinary power offer all particular churches and groups of them. Moreover, this primacy strengthens and protects the proper, ordinary, and immediate power, which bishops possess in the particular churches entrusted to their care. §2. In fulfilling the office of supreme pastor of the Church, the Roman Pontiff is always joined in communion with the other bishops and with the universal Church. He nevertheless has the right, according to the needs of the Church, to determine the manner, whether personal or collegial, of exercising this office. §3. No appeal or recourse is permitted against a sentence or decree of the Roman Pontiff.
Catechism of The Catholic Church 2341 The virtue of chastity comes under the cardinal virtue of temperance, which seeks to permeate the passions and appetites of the senses with reason.

"NOTHING COMES BUT THAT WHICH GOD WILLS" (St. Thomas More)
On June 22 the liturgy celebrates the memorial of two great saints, Thomas More and John Fisher. Both men paid the ultimate price in witness to Catholic faith. Both won the martyr's crown.
John Fisher was the Bishop of Rochester, England. He was a saintly and scholarly man who wrote many works against currant doctrinal errors. Thomas More was married and had a son and three daughters. Under King Henry VIII, he was appointed Lord Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas was a staunch son of the Catholic Church and a fearless defender its teachings.
At that time England was Catholic to the core. The Pope had honored Henry VIII by proclaiming him the “Defender of the Faith.” No one could possibly have imagined that within a few short years both men would be prisoners in the Tower of London because of their beliefs. Yet, this is what came to be! Rather than deny Catholic faith, Bishop Fisher was beheaded on June 22 and Sir Thomas More on July 6, 1535. The only mercy shown them by Henry was that they were spared the agony of being hung, drawn and quartered.
Henry wanted Rome to declare his marriage to Catherine to be null so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. Rome would not grant the annulment simply because there were no valid grounds. Marriage is indissoluble. Henry's marriage to Catherine could not be broken by any power on earth, not even the Church. Nevertheless, Henry divorced Catherine and married Anne. In July of 1533, Pope Clement VII excommunicated King Henry VIII. Henry then formally broke unity with the Pope and declared himself the head of the Church of England. Next, he demanded that all of his subjects, priests and people, sign the Oath of Loyalty to him and reject the authority of the Pope. The penalty for refusal: death!
By May 15, 1532, every bishop in England had signed the Oath of Loyalty. Thus, they formally rejected the faith that they had sworn to defend by their Episcopal consecration. There was only one exception, Bishop John Fisher, who fearlessly said that he would remain loyal to the Pope. Just as John the Baptist had been willing to die to defend the sanctity of marriage, so he also would be willing to defend the Church's teaching in the face of death.
Sir Thomas More was just as faithful. His wife pleaded with him as did his beloved daughter, Margaret. "Sign the oath! Live! Life is good! We will have it made!" Thomas' answer was simple. "How many years do I have left? How many pleasures can I enjoy in life? Nothing is worth my eternal salvation. If I reject Catholic faith by denying the papacy, I will lose my soul for all eternity." He refused to sign the Oath of Loyalty.
St. Thomas and St. John Fisher lost their heads but saved their souls. The Church has proclaimed that they are saints in heaven. As to those who signed the Oath of Loyalty to Henry VIII, we can only pray that they repented from their sin against faith.
This is the example that the liturgy gives us. In these days, when the rejection of the Teaching Authority of the Holy Father has become fashionable, the Church is teaching us to remain steadfast in faith. If we are to remain Catholic and save our souls, we must remain faithful to the teachings of Christ's Vicar on Earth, the Holy Father. There is no other way!
In the opening prayer of their Mass, the Church prays: "May the prayers of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More give us the courage to proclaim our faith by the witness of our lives." May we too always have the courage to stand up for our faith!
