July 8, 2007 - - - SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
“Put on then, as God’s holy and beloved people, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience. Forgive one another; and if one has a complaint against another, as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also forgive. And above all these things put on charity, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And always be thankful - - - And whatever you do in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3: 12-15,17).

Gospel Words of Jesus Christ Our Divine Savior
27 And Jesus looking on them, said: With men it is impossible; but not with God: for all things are possible with God. (Mark 10: 27)
From the First Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians
26 For see your vocation, brethren, that there are not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble: 27 But the foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the wise; and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that he may confound the strong. 28 And the base things of the world, and the things that are contemptible, hath God chosen, and things that are not, that he might bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory in his sight. 30 But of him are you in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, as it is written: He that glorieth, may glory in the Lord. (1: 26-31)
Spiritual Thought Of The Week
From Blessed Are The Pure In Heart by Bishop Robert W. Finn: “Lust indulged starves the soul. (Proverbs 13:19): A real problem. Our human sexuality is created as something good by God. It is a gift. It also suffers from the effects of original sin and so can manifest not only good but evil. Pornography is one such evil. It assaults human dignity and commodifies people and human sexuality. It starves the human soul which has a spiritual dimension which must be nurtured by giving and receiving a personal love. While pornography is not a new problem, the development of the mass media and recent technological advances have made it much easier to access this deceptive evil.”
From The Imitation Of Christ By Thomas A Kempis
Book Three the Forty- Third Chapter- - - THE VOICE OF CHRIST: “MY CHILD, do not let the fine-sounding and subtle words of men deceive you. For the kingdom of heaven consists not in talk but in virtue. Attend, rather, to My words which enkindle the heart and enlighten the mind, which excite contrition and abound in manifold consolations. Never read them for the purpose of appearing more learned or more wise. Apply yourself to mortifying your vices, for this will benefit you more than your understanding of many difficult questions. Though you shall have read and learned many things, it will always be necessary for you to return to this one principle: I am He who teaches man knowledge, and to the little ones I give a clearer understanding than can be taught by man. He to whom I speak will soon be wise and his soul will profit. But woe to those who inquire of men about many curious things, and care very little about the way they serve Me.”
From The Teachings Of The Second Vatican Council
SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM (On the Sacred Liturgy) #9: “The sacred liturgy does not exhaust the entire activity of the Church. Before men can come to the liturgy they must be called to faith and to conversion: "How then are they to call upon him in whom they have not yet believed? But how are they to believe him whom they have not heard? And how are they to hear if no one preaches? And how are men to preach unless they be sent?" (Rom. 10:14-15). Therefore the Church announces the good tidings of salvation to those who do not believe, so that all men may know the true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, and may be converted from their ways, doing penance. To believers also the Church must ever preach faith and penance, she must prepare them for the sacraments, teach them to observe all that Christ has commanded, and invite them to all the works of charity, piety, and the apostolate. For all these works make it clear that Christ's faithful, though not of this world, are to be the light of the world and to glorify the Father before men.”
From The Code Of Canon Law Canon 341 §1. The decrees of an ecumenical council do not have obligatory force unless they have been approved by the Roman Pontiff together with the council fathers, confirmed by him, and promulgated at his order. §2. To have obligatory force, decrees which the college of bishops issues when it places a truly collegial action in another way initiated or freely accepted by the Roman Pontiff need the same confirmation and promulgation.
Catechism of The Catholic 2340 “Whoever wants to remain faithful to his baptismal promises and resist temptations will want to adopt the means for doing so: self-knowledge, practice of an ascesis adapted to the situations that confront him, obedience to God's commandments, exercise of the moral virtues, and fidelity to prayer. "Indeed it is through chastity that we are gathered together and led back to the unity from which we were fragmented into multiplicity."

"NO! NO! IT IS A SIN!"
On Friday, July 6, the Church honors the wonderful young saint, Maria Goretti, Virgin & Martyr. Maria was a vivacious child who lived in the small town of Nettuno, Italy. She was also a pious and devoted youth who had a special love for Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament & for Our Blessed Mother. Her youth was filled with joy as she prayed her rosary daily and was faithful in the frequent reception of the sacraments.
One day, however, the joy of her youth ended abruptly. A young man, Alessandro by name, tried to seduce her into committing a grave sin against the sixth commanded. Maria was horrified at the suggestion. Immediately she responded: "No! No! It is a sin!" The young man insisted but Maria held her ground. She would not cooperate in any way in a sinful act. Then, after constantly harassing her, Alessandro tried to force her to submit to him against her will. Heroically, Maria insisted: "No! No! It is a sin! I will not commit a sin against God!”
Finally, Alessandro gave her a terrible ultimatum. "Give in or I will kill you!" Maria's answer was the same. It was the answer of a saint. "No! No!" she said, "It is a sin!" In a senseless act of rage, lust and violence, the young man stabbed Maria fourteen times. She fell to the floor, mortally wounded. When her mother found her several hours later, she was more dead than alive. Only after her mother insisted did she reveal her assailants name. “It was Alessandro, Mama. He wanted me to commit a terrible sin.”
The trip to the hospital was dreadful. Maria was placed in the back of a horse drawn wagon, which traveled ten miles over a bumpy road. At the hospital, there was no anesthesia so the doctors had to operate while she was fully conscious. Maria suffered horribly. But, it was hopeless. A priest was called; Maria was dying.
To preserve her purity and in witness to Catholic faith, Maria Goretti paid the ultimate price, the price of her life. Before death, our young heroine gave us another example of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, Our Blessed Lord. “Mama,” she said. “I forgive Alessandro. I will pray that he will be with me in heaven.” Maria Goretti lived and died like a saint. Saint Maria Goretti was only twelve years old when she gave her life rather than participate in an act that she knew was against God’s law.
Fifty years later, Pope Pius XII raised Maria Goretti to the status of a canonized saint of the Holy, Roman, and Catholic Church. He also named her to be the patron saint of all the youth of the world. What a wonderful model St. Maria Goretti is for all of us in these days when the modern world has glorified sins of the flesh. Saint Maria Goretti, pray for our youth. Pray for all of us in our struggle with the world, the flesh and the devil. May Our Blessed Mother, the Virgin most pure, grant us the grace to follow the example of St. Maria Goretti, the Patron Saint of Youth!
